What is Mask in a control porperties for?

Hi all,

I've created a new control "Button", in which I've filled some parameters in its properties. All the properties are quite intuitive until Mask comes.

I found an example: Using a mask in Storyboard But it continues being a mistery to me.

I thought, at the beging, to use this Mask for making an effect over the control Button, such as when the user presses the button, it changes its appearance. 

 

Could anyone make this concept clear, please?
